FARO and the Windows RPC Server

What is the RPC Server?

The RPC server allows programs to share data through a network and transfer information to another device. RPC enables you to manage devices over this network, such as printers and scanners.  In the context of VTube-LASER, RPC is used to communicate with the FARO arm driver.

An Example RPC Server Dialog

If, at FARO connection, you get a message that the RPC server is unavailable like this, then this indicates that the RPC server is not answering requests from VTube-LASER.

  1. These steps assume you have installed the FARO driver on your VTube-LASER computer.
  2. If the FARO connection has worked on this computer in the past, the simplest solution is to reboot the computer first.
  3. If the RPC server continues to experience this issue - it could be because the service is disabled. You can follow the steps below to re-enable the RPC services in your system.

Resolution: Be Sure the RPC Services are Running

Open the search bar in your taskbar by clicking the magnifying glass icon. You can also bring it up with the Windows + S keyboard shortcut.

Type in Services and click on the first search result.

Scroll down and locate the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service from the list. Right-click on the service and then select Properties from the context menu.

Ensure that the Startup type is set to Automatic. Afterward, click on the Start button to property start the service.

Click Apply and then close the pop-up window. Repeat the same steps for the following three services:

  1. RPC Endpoint Mapper
  2. Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator
  3. DCOM Service Process Launcher

After starting each service, restart your computer and check if the RPC server error remains.
